Charles A. Prentice III, affectionately known as “Ham,” age 55, passed away on Friday, December 19, 2025, at UPMC Passavant in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on February 2, 1970, in Steubenville, Ohio, Charles was the son of Charles A. Prentice Jr. and Clarissa Carney Speaker. He was a proud graduate of Wintersville High School, Class of 1988.
Charles was a man whose presence could light up a room. Known for his upbeat, happy go lucky spirit, he had a way of making people feel comfortable, welcome, and seen. Whether he was working the grill, dancing to his favorite music, or talking football, Charles brought laughter and warmth wherever he went. He was an avid Ohio State University and Pittsburgh Steelers fan and truly enjoyed dancing. Faith was an important part of his life, and he proudly called Greater Zion Temple Family Worship Center his church home.
For more than 20 years, Charles worked as a grill cook, including the last 12 years at Texas Roadhouse, where he was well known for his strong work ethic and positive attitude.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles A. Prentice Jr.; his paternal grandparents, Charles Sr. and Mildred Griffith Prentice; his maternal grandparents, Emanuel and Louise Smith Carney; his bonus brother, Paul Speaker; five uncles and four aunts; and most recently his bonus father, William “Daddy Bill” Speaker.
Charles leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. He is survived by his mother, Clarissa Carney Speaker of Ohio; his sons, Brandan (Valicia) Prentice and Isaiah Prentice, both of Ohio; his sister, Stephanie Prentice of Virginia; his brother, Corey (Geofrilyn) Hairston of Virginia; his brothers Maurice (Maria) Prentice, Christopher Prentice, and Curtis Prentice, all of Ohio; Brian (Natera) Brown of Ohio; William (Regina) Speaker of Ohio; and Clark Day of Arizona. He was a proud grandfather to Serenity, Brandan Jr., Rhylo, Alexah, Kyler, and Vylecia, all of Ohio, and will be deeply missed by his over 40 first cousins, relatives, and friends.
Charles has been entrusted to the care of Gregory Martin Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Greater Zion Temple Family Worship Center. Viewing will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with the service beginning at noon.
