Obituary

Claudia J. Mayo Holmes of Steubenville, Ohio, departed from this life on 10/05/2024 with her family by her side.

She was born on July 29, 1956 in Smithfield, Ohio, the 11th child to the late Clifford and Elizabeth Moore Mayo.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Hilda Mayo Dorsey (Ben) and Lillian Mayo Lucas (Jack); brothers: Rev Robert Mayo, James "Jimmy" Mayo (Jackie), H.R. Mayo and Micah Mayo.

Claudia was baptized at Second Baptist Church at the age of 8, and was a current member of Faith Ministries Church, Columbus, OH.

She is a 1974 graduate of Steubenville High School. She continued her education endeavors by earning a certificate in early childhood education in 2001 and associate's degree in childcare management in 2002 from Eastern Gateway of Steubenville. She earned a bachelor's degree in mental health and human services at Franciscan University of Steubenville in 2006 and earned her Master's degree in strategic leadership from Mountain State University in 2012.

She was employed by Hills Dept Store, Sears, Daycare Depot and retired as a social educator from Steubenville City Schools in 2017.

Her community and professional involvement included serving on committees for the Jefferson County Fourth Street Health Center, and Grand Theater Restoration and Fair housing Practices Commission. She was PTO president at Garfield school, a member of the Women's Guild Franciscan University, Y.W.C.A, President and vice president of the Ladies of Serenity Federated Club, band mom worker for Big Red High School, a Mary Kay Consultant, volunteer for GED preparation, mentor for the Bridges program, lifetime member of the Steubenville High School Alumni Association, Faith Ministries Church Bible Study, and Sigma Chi Psi Sorority, INC, Alpha Mu chapter. She received the Women's Club Scholars award and the Dennis Palmer Scholarship award. She spoke as the Eastern Gateway convocation speaker at the 2013 Phi Theta Kappa convocation, and received the SHS Pathfinder award in 2014. She loved life and learning, and was always so inspiring to others. She spread so much love and generosity to everyone in her presence.

Surviving is her husband of 49 years Frank E. Holmes III; daughter, Shadonna Holmes (Shawn Gilliam), Columbus, OH; son, Frank E. Holmes IV (Martina Livingston), New Albany, OH; granddaughters, Quartazha Holmes and Cymree Holmes, and great granddaughter Ky'Ori Butts; brothers, Alfred Mayo, Detroit, Michigan; Andrew Mayo (Sherry), Ajijic, Mexico; Ethel Mayo, Columbus, OH; and Dr. Patricia Fletcher (Lawrence), Steubenville, OH; and a host of friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren and loved ones.

Visitation will be held on 10/12/2024 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, home going service at 12:00, at Gregory Martin Funeral Home, 711 South St., Steubenville, OH 43952.

Interment at the convenience of the family.

Her favorite scripture, "But, seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Turn to Him first for help; take his character for your pattern.
