IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Derek L.
Gilliam
December 30, 1955 – January 31, 2024
In fond remembrance of Derek Len Gilliam, 68, of Columbus, OH who was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Derek came into this world on December 30, 1955, in Steubenville, Ohio, born to his cherished mother, Ethel Gilliam, of Weirton, WV. Derek's journey included graduating from Weirton Senior High School in 1974 and pursuing further studies at West Liberty College, where he met his future wife, Stephanie Hicks. Their union on May 31, 1975, marked the beginning of a life together that led Derek to relocate his growing family to Columbus, OH. Establishing roots, forging a career, and welcoming a son, Shawn, and a daughter, Kristen, proved Derek's devotion as a husband, father and all-around family man.
Derek's advanced technical aptitude allowed him to have a long-tenured career as a bindery machine specialist, serving in various operator and leadership roles. Retiring in 2017 granted him the opportunity to indulge more in his greatest joys: being a father, a papa, and a great-grandpa. Derek's life exemplified resilience and kindness, leaving an everlasting impact on those fortunate to know him. His warm heart and unwavering spirit will be remembered as his enduring legacy.
Derek is preceded in death by his grandmother, Adele "Ma" Currenton-Jeter, mother Ethel Gilliam, brother Larry Gilliam, and beloved niece Ebony Gilliam, all of Weirton, WV. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Gilliam of Columbus, OH. Derek also leaves behind his loving children: Shawn (ShaDonna) Gilliam of Columbus, OH and Kristen (Alex) Harper of New Albany, OH, both contributing to his expanding legacy. Grandchildren: Dominique Gilliam, Arianna Gilliam, Askari Abdurraqib, Kylie Harper, Darion Gilliam, Darius Gilliam, Alexia Harper, and Khloé Norman, and great-granddaughter Journee Dannals. Beloved siblings: Tracine and Marc Gilliam of Weirton, WV as well as Jeffery Gilliam of Steubenville, OH. Grandchildren's mothers, who were dear to his heart: Stacy Hall, Angela James and Felecia Williams, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to carry the torch of Derek's prevailing love. May he find eternal peace.
The family will be available to greet friends on Thursday, February 22, 2024, starting at 11:30 am until the time of Derek's life celebration at noon, held at the GREGORY-MARTIN CHAPEL, located at 255 S. 7th Street in Steubenville, Ohio.
