Ms. Evelyn J. Taylor of Steubenville, Ohio passed away on March 19, 2016. She was born April 2, 1922 in Bidwell, Ohio.
Ms. Taylor was the last surviving member of her immediate family. The daughter of the late Hanon D. and Erdola Walden Herndon, of Bridgeport, Ohio. She was employed as a nurse for Dr. W. W. Baker for 18 years until his death in 1968. In 1969, she accepted position with the American Red Cross, Washington, D.C. in the office of personnel, and later transferred to Disaster Services as level 5 staffing officer. Her work with Red Cross carried her world-wide to Vietnam, Japan, Okinawa, Europe, and Australia. She retired from Red Cross after serving on Hurricane Andrew in Florida in 1992, and became an active volunteer with the local Jefferson County Red Cross until her death.
She was proceeded in death by four sisters and one brother: Esther Herndon, Bridgeport, OH; Louise Murray, Steubenville, OH; Estella Sizemore, Pittsburgh, PA; Theola Young, Steubenville, OH; and Herman Herndon, Detroit, MI. She is survived by her only daughter, Brenda Taylor Hairston, of San Diego, CA; two grandsons, Derrick and Justin Hairston, of San Diego, CA; two great granddaughters and one great grandson. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
