IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Freddie Lee
Allen
May 31, 1939 – April 16, 2024
Freddie Lee Allen, 84, of Steubenville, Ohio, gained his heavenly wings on April 16, 2024, just five weeks after his beloved wife, Frankie Lee, went to be with the Lord. He was born May 31, 1939, in Moultrie, Georgia, to the union of Ester Sr. and Emma (Moore) Allen, and he was the eldest of their 11 children. Freddie was known for his generosity and friendly demeanor, which endeared him to all who knew him.
A talented athlete, Freddie played baseball and football in high school. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. Following Basic Training, he was assigned to the 507th Ordinance Company and stationed in Germany. It was there that he married his life partner, Frankie Lee Edwards, on July 4, 1959, in Steubenville, Ohio. Together, they welcomed Bernadette, Fred, and Yvonne (Lynn). While serving in Germany, Freddie fulfilled his duties and traveled across Europe playing baseball for the United States Army, showcasing his athleticism and dedication to his country.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Army in 1962, Freddie returned home and embarked on a long and fulfilling career with Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, retiring in 2001. Retirement didn't slow him down; he found new ways to stay active, working at Eastern Gateway College and later the Jefferson County Housing Authority. Freddie's dedication to his work and community was unwavering. In 2021, when Frankie fell ill, Freddie became her full-time caregiver, a testament to his deep love and devotion.
A proud Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Freddie was often seen sporting the team's logo on his signature ball cap. But his love for the Steelers was only surpassed by his love for his family. He was firm but affectionate, providing unconditional love to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—a love that will continue to resonate in their hearts and in the hearts of all who knew him.
Freddie's love of music was a gift he shared with his children and grandchildren, introducing them to the soulful sounds of old-school R&B and the Blues. He was an active member of Legion Post 274, spending many evenings there with fellow legionnaires and close friends.
In addition to his parents, Freddie is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frankie; his grandson, Carlin DeVille; his granddaughter, Frankie Allen; his brother, Ester; his sister-in-law, Josephine; and his brothers-in-law, Manny, Henry, Johnnie, and Connie.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his three children, Bernadette Prentice, Frederick Allen, and Yvonne Lynn Mays (Walter). He was a loving grandfather to Dudley, Rene, Alesia (Shane), T'Keyah, Natalia, Bryson, and Lorenzo, and a doting great-grandfather to Izabella, Carlo, Enzo, Kalaysta, Avi'onna, Quartazha, Keyonna, Zkarre, Cior, Avontay Amarion, and Major. He is also survived by his sisters, Alberta, Keteriah (Harry), Linda, Brenda, and Juanita; his brothers, Robert, La'VERN (La'Teesha), Gary, and Thomas; his sister Christine; sister-in-law Jewel (Kenny) and his brother-in-law, Ralph, along with a host of cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
