Garfield Hayden Jr. (Leo), 67 years old, a native of Steubenville, Ohio transitioned peacefully on June 9, 2020. He was born on November 9, 1952, in Martins Ferry, Ohio to the late Garfield Hayden Sr. and Bernadine M. Hayden (Smith). Garfield was an active and committed worker of Weirton Steel, which eventually transitioned into Arcelor Metal for over fifty years. Throughout his extensive tenure at the mill, he worked his way from Brick Layer to Operations Shift Manager. He was a long-time member of the Steubenville Parks and Recreation Committee where he helped implement invaluable support for the Steubenville Community. Garfield will be the first honoree to receive a memorial bench designated by the Parks and Recreation Committee.
Garfield cherished sports and coached Flag Football for many years at Grant and McKinley schools in Steubenville, Ohio. He coached Little League baseball for over twenty-five years. Garfield was also a Football Official for approximately twenty-one years and officiated Basketball for nine years. His favorite team was the Michigan Wolverines. His favorite pastimes were watching sports, sports, more sports, and Westerns.
Garfield loved his family and friends. He devoted his life to knowing they were loved and cared for. He was united in marriage to Wa Cella M. (Smith) Hayden and was a loving husband, devoted father, nurturing and supportive grandfather, caring brother, loyal friend, and a strong community r epresentative. Garfield is now dedicated to the service of our Lord and Savior.
Garfield was preceded in death by his parents Garfield Hayden Sr. and Bernadine M. Hayden and two brothers, Craig Hayden and Richard Hayden. He is survived by and leaves to carry on his legacy through his wife Wa Cella M. Hayden, his children Tyrone (Gwynn) Stewart of Columbus, OH, Mahoganey (Henry) Fleming of Steubenville, OH and Eric (Alexis) Hayden of Weirton, W V, and three step-children, Lou Shuanna (Jake) Sciance of Toronto, OH, Lew Smith of Toronto, OH and Lu Reis (Emily) Smith of Follansbee, WV. He has thirteen grandchildren, Tyrrell Stewart of Cincinnati, OH, Kye, Myla, Phynyx and Hy nnah Fleming of Steubenville, OH, Lucas, Aiden, EJ, Ellie ana, and Emersyn Hayden of Weirton, WV, Kiara, Kyre and Kamryn Smith of Toronto, OH and Rowan, Colin and Felicity Smith of Follansbee, WV. Three brothers, Willie Hayden of Steubenville, OH, Michael Hayden of Fayette County, PA, and Robert (Cynthia) Hayden of Steubenville, OH, Four sisters, Gail Booth of Columbus, OH, Michelle Sayles of Fayette County, PA, Shelia (Donnie) Seals of Cleveland, OH, and Dawn Hayden of Columbus, OH. He also leaves a host of other family and friends.
