Gay Velvet Wainwright passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, surrounded by family. Born December 6, 1960, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Doris Alice Carl Wainwright and Louis Maurice Wainwright, Gay lived a life defined by her family’s love.

As a devoted mother to Velvet Wainwright, LaMar (Alisha) Wainwright, and Mikal Wainwright, she treasured every moment spent with her family, finding her greatest joy in being surrounded by those she loved. Raised in the Catholic Church, she remained a Christian until her passing.

Beyond her devotion to her faith and family, Gay also delighted in life’s simple pleasures, especially having her hair and nails done.

She was a graduate of East High School, where she was a member of the dance team. She worked at Youngstown City Schools for over 25 years and retired as a proud parent liaison. She carried with her many cherished memories of former students whose gratitude and appreciation meant so much to her, a lasting reflection of the lives she touched. She often spoke directly; you might not have liked her delivery, but the message always had meaning and purpose.

She believed in the power of education and the joy of reading, and she carried that passion into every part of her life. Books were always by her side, and the local library was one of her favorite places, a space she not only cherished for herself but eagerly shared with others. She often took her children, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren there, encouraging their curiosity and love of learning.

She loved making comforting, family-style meals. Whether it was her potato salad, her lasagna, or her unforgettable rigatoni, she enjoyed bringing family together for good food, love, and quality time.

She enjoyed listening to music and dancing. She also had a rare gift for conversation, able to talk thoughtfully about almost any topic. Her presence was lively, welcoming, and deeply enriching to those around her.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, grandchildren, Zy’Airah, LaMar Jr., and Ahmari; her siblings, who refer to her as their “beloved sister,” Darlene Wainwright Sellers, Louis (Kelly) Wainwright, Delphine Wainwright Allen, Timothy Wainwright, all of Youngstown; Eric (Robin) Wainwright of Georgia; and Mary Jo Wainwright Jones of Michigan; along with nieces, nephews, and countless extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Kim Wainwright, and her nephew, Reggie Allen, Jr.

The family has chosen to hold services privately at this time.
