George “Ponjoe” Scott Jr. passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.
George was born Jan. 15, 1959, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of George Scott Sr. and Eleanor Mitchell.
A graduate of North High School, George retired from Southern Nevada Culinary, where he worked as a chef.
Known for his generous heart and phenomenal sense of humor, George always put others before himself and had a special gift for making people laugh and ensuring everyone around him had a great time. He never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone feel welcome. Whether through a joke, a story, or a helping hand, George left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.
George enjoyed watching football and was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan. He loved spending time with his family and friends, creating memories filled with laughter, love, and togetherness. He also believed in helping others whenever he could, often reminding those around him, “You never know where you'll be in life, so give if you can.” It wasn't just something he said—it was the way he lived his life.
Above all, George was a devoted father, grandfather, son, uncle, brother, and friend who cherished every moment spent with those he loved. His kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit will forever be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
George is survived by his mother, Eleanor Mitchell of North Carolina; his children, Christopher Scott, Kristin (Antoine) McElroy, John “Frankie” (Brandi) Council-Carter, and Alexa-Paige Foster; his cherished grandchildren, John Jr., Akira, Aniya, Jordyn, Ahmad, Jayla, and Jayce; his brother, William Whitsett of Nevada; his sisters, Cynthia Whitsett and Ceil Scott; his aunt, Loretta Colyar McClellan; his uncles, James Colyar and Lewis Colyar; his special cousin, Emmaline “Tutti” Adams; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
In addition to his father, George was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Croff; his beloved grandson, Reshaud Biggs Jr.; his grandparents, Nobel and Oralee Colyar; his aunts, Alberta Colyar Tellington and Julia Cochran; his uncle, Clifton Colyar; and his cousin, Sarah Phillips.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Beeghly Oaks Center for Rehabilitation and Healing for the compassionate care and support they provided to George during his illness.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Fellowship Tabernacle Christian Center, 2139 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44507. Family and friends may pay their respects during the viewing from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the church.
