Hughes "Babe" M. Pendergrast was born April 1, 1935, in Union, South Carolina to the union of the late Henry and Sillar Pendergrast. He expired on March 18, 2020, at Weirton Medical Center.

Babe graduated from Union High School. He worked at Weirton Steel for over 30 years and drove for Bolgers Nursing Home for several years.

He had an amazing heart and was a kind-spirited man. He was the type that never met a stranger and never spoke ill of anyone. Family values were important to him and he cherished his wife and family. Babe was a jokester and an all around good guy. He had a passion for cars and enjoyed detailing and fixing them up.

He was preceded in death by his parents whom he adored; sisters, Mabel Stevens, Anna Spencer, and Hazel Dawkins; brothers, William, Robert, and Henry Pendergrast; and a loving daughter, Marcia Lynn-Cruder.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth; his sisters, Lucille Colliers and Dorothy Lee of Weirton; brothers, Paul (Normie) of Canton, Ohio; James of Weirton; Richard Pendergrast and Leroy Worthy of South Carolina; his son, Shawn West of Canton, Ohio; sister-in-law, Anna Harris of Dillonvale, Ohio; numerous nieces, nephews, and special cousins; special nieces, Valerie Curtis of Decatur, Georgia and Carolyn Dawkins; special nephews, Larry and Lawrence Fernandez and Joshua Harris; a Godson, Jermaine Culbreath of Weddington, NC. So many family members and friends will miss him.

Services will be held at GREGORY-MARTIN FUNERAL HOME Chapel, 255 S. 7th Street in Steubenville, Ohio, on Saturday, March 21, 2020. Viewing from 10 am until the time of service 11 am. Rev. Norries A. Hood of Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, will deliver the eulogy. Interment at Holly Hills Memorial Gardens in Colerain, Ohio.
