On August 9th, 1945; an event took place that would forever change the world, the birth of Hylan Joseph "Jo-Jo" (Birden) Atkins and the dropping of the second atom bomb on Japan by the United States, at Nagasaki, resulting in Japan's unconditional surrender. Jo-Jo being born on that remarkable day added a vibrant mark on the world. He was born to Hylan & Estelle Birden; he was later adopted by Mary Elizabeth (Bessie) Atkins and she later married Chester A. Harrison and together they raised Jo-Jo.
He was educated in the Toronto City School System where he had a standout football career. After high school he joined the United States Army. He served honorably during the Vietnam Era. He was wounded in combat, losing his left eye, and discharged during his second tour of duty. While in the Army, Jo-Jo started his love of boxing.
He had a long lasting love, Kathleen "Kathy" Kravlovic, and together they enjoyed over 30 years together. The couple was inseparable. He truly adored his wife, Kathy.
Jo-Jo was an accomplished cosmetologist and often maintained the hair doos of family members. He was a witty individual who loved sports and who was passionate about Big Red Football, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was also an accomplished bowler participating in leagues in both Steubenville and Toronto, Ohio. He adored his family and although his was a strict father he taught his children to respect their elders, to never quit and most important to always be respectful.
He was preceded in death by his birth parents and his Mother, Mary Elizabeth Harrison, Father, Chester Arthur Harrison, six siblings and his first wife Patricia.
He died peacefully at Trinity West Hospital on February 17th, 2016 in Steubenville, Ohio at the age of 70. Jo-Jo is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen Atkins; children, Brenda Knight, Lori Knight, Joseph Marvel Atkins, James (Lacey) Bramhall, Shawn Allen Atkins, Anthony David (Kristy) Atkins, Angela Lynn (Leonard) Atkins-Fields, Tabitha Bramhall; siblings, Donna Terry, special Aunt Gloria Johnson, Carol Birden, Joclyn Holiday and Karen Blanchard, 32 Grandchildren, 4 Great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, many other relatives and dear friends.
