Isaiah Culbreath Jr., age 81, affectionately known to many as “King Iko” or simply “Iko,” transitioned peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
He was born on July 29, 1944, in Steubenville, Ohio, the beloved son of the late Isaiah Culbreath Sr. and Mattie Burns Culbreath.
Isaiah was a proud graduate of Steubenville “Big Red” High School, Class of 1962. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong commitment to his community and culture. He was an active member of the Progressive Blacks Social Club, a respected organization that promoted civic engagement, unity, and social progress within the Black community of Steubenville.
For many years, Isaiah worked as an electrician at Weirton Steel, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He remained there until his retirement, taking pride in providing for his family and contributing to the region’s industrial workforce.
Music was one of Isaiah’s greatest passions and the heartbeat of his life’s work. He was a talented musician and proud member of The T.N.T. Flashers, a local soul and funk band that emerged in the late 1960s and became well known throughout the region. Their music brought joy to countless audiences and remains part of Steubenville’s cultural legacy.
In addition to performing, Isaiah was a highly respected DJ for many years and was once recognized as one of the top DJs in the area. He generously shared his knowledge and skills, mentoring and teaching countless others the craft. His influence continues through the many DJs he inspired and trained.
Isaiah also served as a longtime radio host on WDIG 950 AM, an Oldies and R&B music station well known throughout the region. Through his years on the air, he shared his deep love for classic music, connected with listeners, and became a familiar and trusted voice in the community.
In addition, Isaiah founded and led Chocolate City Discos, a community program he created to uplift and showcase young and emerging talent. Through this initiative, he coordinated events, organized performances, and presented awards to recognize excellence. He took great pride in encouraging creativity, mentorship, and opportunity for the next generation.
Those who knew Isaiah will remember his smooth voice, infectious laughter, and the special energy he brought into every room. Whether he was DJ’ing, performing on stage, or simply spending time with friends, he had a natural gift for connecting with people and making moments memorable. He knew how to bring people together through music, conversation, and genuine warmth. His presence made every gathering feel special, and his spirit left a lasting impression on all who encountered him.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Isaiah was known for his warm spirit and outgoing personality. He truly never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed cheering on his favorite team with passion and pride.
Two phrases that guided Isaiah’s life were “Love Never Dies” and “Do Your Part.” He lived by these words daily, demonstrating compassion, responsibility, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
