Obituary

Mabel Anderson Hendricks ,109 years old, of Steubenville, Ohio gained her heavenly wings on Saturday May 16, 2020. She was born in Lake City, Florida on November 16, 1910 to the late Horace and Estella Bryant Anderson. Mabel was the fifth child of six siblings. She was educated at The Johnson Academy and Johns High School in Orlando, Florida.


After meeting and marrying Sherman Watson, Mabel left the Florida area and settled in Akron, Ohio. Reared as a Baptist, she joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Akron, Ohio and served faithfully in the missionary department. After the passing of her first husband, in 1963 she married the late Deacon Edward T. Hendricks of Steubenville, Ohio and moved to the Ohio Valley. Sister Hendricks became a Deaconess and welcomed the opportunity to continue to serve in the missionary ministry of Second Baptist Church. She served many years as the president of the missionary ministry. She was also very active in the Eastern Ohio Baptist Association and served on the finance committee for many years under Sister Pearly Sanders.


Sister Hendricks was the oldest member of Second Baptist Church and was bestowed the honor of "Mother" of Second Baptist Church by Pastor Marvin Barner in 2017. The members of Second truly loved Mother Hendricks and showed their expressions of love especially on her birthday (the Missionary Birthday Parties) , Women's Day and the church anniversary.

Sister Hendricks was very active in the Eastern Stars on the local, state and national levels . She advanced to the highest degree , Royal Lady , in the Eastern Stars. She was also elected the Supreme Grand Matron of United Ancient Free and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons of North America.

Mabel was a devoted and supportive, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her five siblings, Horace, Dave, Mary, Gussie and Lee. Also, children Rolland, Samuel and Delores Hendricks and Carrie Anderson.


She leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter Brenda Watson, son, William( Sheila) Hendricks of Steubenville, Ohio, her grand daughter who was more like a daughter, Vanessa S. Kirby of Brooklyn, New York, her only living nephew, John Piner of Detroit Michigan; her oldest living niece, Clara Nivins of Orlando, Florida and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren, great nieces and nephews and special friends Mary Wade and Gloria Howard.


A public visitation will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2020 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at Second Baptist Church, 717 Adams Street in Steubenville, Ohio. In keeping with the guidelines associated with Corvid 19, all persons are required to wear masks and gloves to the public viewing. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at Union Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held for Mother Hendricks at a later date.
