Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Mary Catherine McGhee, affectionately known as Cathy, was born on September 27, 1953, in Yanceyville, North Carolina, to the late James Henry McGhee and Maggie L. McGhee. She was 72 years old.
Cathy later made her home in Steubenville, Ohio, where she attended Steubenville City Schools. She was a woman whose life was centered around family, love, generosity, and caring for others.
Cathy had a special gift for braiding hair. She was incredibly talented and could braid hair on just about anything. Her creativity and skill made her stand out, and her gift will always be remembered by those who had the pleasure of experiencing it.
More than anything, Cathy was family-oriented. She was the type of person who would do anything for those she loved. She had a giving heart and was always willing to help, offer support, and be there whenever she was needed. She loved her children and grandchildren in a way that was uniquely her own, and there was never any doubt that her family held a special place in her heart.
Cathy’s memory will live on through the stories, laughter, traditions, and memories she leaves behind. Her family will forever carry the love she gave them and the impact she made on their lives.
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, James Henry McGhee and Maggie L. McGhee, and her siblings, Bennie L. Poteat, James Clinton McGhee, Rose Ann Swearingen, Geraldine Wise, Robert “Bobby” McGhee, Diane McGhee, and Anna Margaret McGhee.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Angela McGhee Bruce and Shawn (Kirsandra) McGhee; her grandchildren, Tequia Brookes, Eugene Bruce Jr., Shawn Womack, Denisha Paige, Ashly McGhee, Destini McGhee, Horace Hampton III (Tre’), Shawn McGhee Jr., Omega McGhee, and Niajah Carter; her sister, Joyce McGhee; a host of great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, friends, and loved ones who will forever miss her.
Though our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the time we were blessed to have with her. Her life was a gift, her love was a blessing, and her memory will never be forgotten.
She was our family’s wildflower, a rose that grew from concrete, whose beauty and strength will forever inspire us.
Rest peacefully, Mom.
You are loved, you are missed, and you will forever live in our hearts.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 noon at the Gregory-Martin Funeral Home Steubenville Chapel, 255 S. 7th Street, Steubenville, Ohio. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery.
