Mae Mae as she was affectionately known, was born on August 18, 1948, in Toronto, Ohio to Thomas and Bertha (Dyer) Whatley. She departed this life peacefully on October 2, 2021, in Raleigh, NC. She was proceeded in death by her parents, a daughter Patrice Harris, a nephew William Armstrong and her seven siblings, James & John Spence, Tom, Louise, Jean, Ralph & Joseph Whatley, two grandchildren Jaron & Mahogany Armstrong, former husband George Hicks Jr and her favorite niece Latanya "Tammy" Whatley.
She was a member of Pilgrim Rest Church in Bellaire, Ohio under the guidance of Pastor Robert Ellsworth and First Lady Frances Ellsworth. She attended Toronto City Schools, Steubenville High School, Wayne County Community College, and Belmont Technical College receiving her degree in Medical Coding and Billing at the age of 60.
She was an excellent cook, an outstanding provider a great nurturer. She loved caring for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. No one ever went homeless or hungry when she had her home. She had the sweetest demeanor and kindest heart. She loved to laugh and had an interesting sense of humor. She enjoyed watching the tv shows "Martin" and "Forensic Files".
She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters, Bertha Mari (Kenneth) White in Columbus, Ohio, Lynn Stubbs in Carlisle, PA, Laurene Stubbs in Steubenville, Ohio, and Laresa (Henry) Wright in Raleigh, NC. One son, Timothy (Marne) Whatley in Columbus, Ohio. thirteen grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart and called her "Granny", LaKeisha Irvin, Sharaunda Stubbs, Darla Irvin, Sharelle Stubbs, Brianne Bickerstaff, LaShawnda Keith, Kiara Johnson, QuinSena Irvin, Quintae Stubbs, StaVontae Stubbs, Diondra Stubbs, ShaVonne Stubbs and Raja'Nee Fletcher, twenty-one great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, special nephews Lamar (Teresa) Whatley and Dirk (Beth) Whatley and special nieces Virginia Whatley and Darryl Feaster, "Sister-friend" Sandra West Roberts, God-sister Kimberly Culbreath Riley, and her honorary children Jerome Peterson & Dr. Caressa (Ron) Peterson and many other nieces, nephews, friends, and family.
