Michael Ray Howard, 72, of Weirton, West Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on May 16, 1953, in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of the late Richard and Julia (Collins) Howard.
Michael worked for the Street Department with the City of Weirton for several years and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. A proud veteran, he carried his service with honor throughout his life.
In his younger years, Michael showcased his athletic talent as a player for the New Jersey Nets during the 1970s. He had a lifelong love of basketball and also enjoyed football, especially cheering for his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Known for his spirited and "tell it like it is" demeanor, Michael was wild at heart, full of jokes, and carried a strict but loving presence, especially when it came to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Korey Howard, and his grandson Kristopher.
Michael leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Martha Howard; his children, Koya Howard, Michael Gilliam Jr., and Marissa (Dina) Howard; grandchildren Brandon, Karon, Kahreem, Alex, Riley, Kaleb, and Jaxson; three great-grandchildren; siblings Deborah Veal, Tara Walker, Melodie (Clyde) Barker, Damon (Lelona) Walker, Richard (Lisa) Howard, Jaqueline (Joe) Carr, and Cheryl Howard; along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will forever carry him in their hearts.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12:00 noon at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, located at the corner of Weir Avenue and Kessel Street in Weirton, West Virginia. Pastor Rudy McAllister will deliver the eulogy. Inurnment will take place at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
Arrangements are entrusted to Gregory-Martin Funeral Home.
