Obituary

Richard Irvin Wilkerson passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on December 5, 2024. He was born on March 10, 1959, in Williamson, West Virginia, to the union of the late Thomas Sr. and Elizabeth Wilkerson, Richard lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, and community.

A proud 1977 graduate of Williamson High School, Ricky was a talented athlete, excelling particularly in basketball. His passion for the game earned him a place in the Williamson High School Athletic Hall of Fame. That love for basketball, combined with his dedication to his community and its youth, became a lifelong mission. As President of the Williamson Buddy League and the beloved coach of the Town Trojans, Ricky mentored and trained countless young athletes. Known for his tough but fair demeanor, he was respected and admired for the discipline and values he instilled both on and off the court. Ricky also served as President of the Williamson Midget League Football, further demonstrating his tireless dedication to empowering youth.

Ricky was also a dedicated healthcare professional, working as a respiratory therapist for 30 years at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky.

Ricky's devotion to his faith was equally profound. Known to many as Elder Ricky, he gave his life to Christ and served as Pastor of Pentecostal Tabernacle United Holy Church. His love for his hometown of Williamson, particularly the Vinson Street area, was unwavering. He was an active City Councilman, a member of the Williamson Park Board, and the President of Southern West Virginia Action for Youth, leaving a lasting legacy of service and leadership. Ricky was a loyal fan of the Minnesota Vikings, Boston Celtics, and Oklahoma Sooners, cheering them on with the same passion he poured into everything he did.

Ricky was preceded in death by his brothers, Jerry, Thomas, and Donald Wilkerson; sisters, Brenda Hunter and Barbara Wells; granddaughter, Ayana Turner; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

To his family and friends, Ricky was more than a coach or community leader—he was a devoted father, brother, uncle, and friend. Known for his wisdom, he offered advice and support without judgment. Ricky's infectious humor, love for singing, dancing, and taking center stage brought joy to all who knew him. His laughter, generosity, and ability to bring people together will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his children, Janice Lawson, Aimee (Quinton) Turner, Richard Wilkerson II, and Alexia Wilkerson. He also leaves behind his siblings, Theresa Blackwell-Tucker, Vanessa Wilkerson, Lawrence Wilkerson, Renee (Ivan) Mitchell, Gloria (Gerry) Thaxton, and Cassandra Gibson. Ricky was a proud grandfather to Jrue (Nikki) Young, Quinton (Koral) Turner, Ivan Turner, Darien Turner, and Trinity Wilkerson, and a loving great-grandfather to Jai and Jaylee Young, and Brielle Turner. He is also survived by his uncles, James (Karen) Webster and Charles Webster; his special aunt, Alma Webster; and his special friends, Hobert Tucker, Marvin Childress, Greg "Hootie" Smith, and Gary Baker. Ricky will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless others whose lives he touched.

Ricky lived a full and impactful life, leaving an indelible mark on his family, his community, and the many lives he touched. His legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest in peace, Elder Ricky. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.
