Sylvester
Rozier
Sep 1, 1956 — Oct 5, 2026
Youngstown
Sylvester “Syl” Rozier, age 70, was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, where he spent his life
creating memories, building relationships, and leaving an impression on those who knew and
loved him. He passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of
memories that will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
Syl was the beloved son of the late Frances Rozier- Simmons and the late William Simmons. A
proud Youngstown native, Syl attended North High School, where he excelled as a talented
football player and track runner. His love and talent for the game led him to Central State
University, where he continued his football career. Ultimately, Syl chose to leave college to
pursue a different path and focus on becoming a family man.
Syl later worked at McDonald Steel, where he dedicated himself to providing for his family. He
was a man who understood the importance of being there for the people he loved and, when
he was able, was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Those who knew Syl will especially remember his sense of humor. He was a natural comedian
who could find a way to make a joke out of almost anything. His ability to make people laugh
was one of the qualities that made him unforgettable, and the laughter and memories he
created will continue to bring smiles to those who loved him.
Syl's life was filled with many chapters and experiences, each contributing to the man he
became. Through it all, family remained an important part of his story. He had a heart for those
close to him and was someone his family could turn to when they needed him.
Syl was a member of Greater Friendship Baptist Church, where he found fellowship and
community.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved partner, Daphney Dates; his children, Shawniquea
“Roe” Rozier and Aaron “AJ” Rozier; his four grandsons, Que’Shawn Rozier, Kylo Rozier, Aaron
Rozier Jr., and Antwan Rozier; and his great-grandson, Aycen Rozier. He is also survived by his
brothers, Williams Simmons, Anthony Simmons, and Christopher Simmons; his sisters, Francine
Simmons and Kim Simmons; and his dear family friend, Candace Williams, who was like a sister
to him. He leaves behind a host of extended family members, relatives, and friends who will
continue to cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and William Simmons; his sister, Joy
Simmons; and other beloved family members who went before him.
As we remember Sylvester “Syl” Rozier, may we choose to remember him with grace,
compassion, and love. May the laughter he shared, the memories he created, and the
connections he made continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His story was
one of many chapters, and his life will forever remain a part of the family and legacy he leaves
behind.
Forever remembered. Forever loved.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 12, 2026, from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Gregory-Martin Funeral Home, Youngstown Chapel, 292 Madison Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio.
